California correspondence, 1852-1854.

Smith's letters to and from family and friends describe his voyage on the steamships New Orleans and Pioneer to California by way of Panama. He notes mining experiences of himself and others from home. There is a resolution creating the Jefferson Fluming Company of the North Fork of the American River, a letter in a letterbook designed by D. Barnes of Connecticut, in which is printed a description of Berford and Company's Great California Express, and a newspaper clipping reporting Smith's death.
